About this Video
In his new book presidential historian Louis Picone explores the fascinating story of Grant’s Tomb, which features memorable characters, public memory, and popular culture. When it was dedicated in 1897, it was the most popular attraction in New York City, often visited by Union and Confederate veterans to celebrate reunification. But as Grant’s legacy began to suffer, so did his tomb. By the latter half of the twentieth century, it had devolved into a pitiful site, forgotten and desecrated. Thankfully that was not the final chapter of Grant’s Tomb and its story is still being told. Just like Ulysses S. Grant’s legacy, in recent years his tomb has also risen from the ashes to reclaim some of its former glory.
