President Chester Arthur's wife, Ellen (Nell), half-length portrait, facing left. In 1880, when, at the age of 42, Nell Arthur caught pneumonia after being out on a chilly January night and died, leaving two children and her husband, who succeeded to the presidency less than a year later, after President James Garfield died from a gunshot wound.
