Red Room Looking South, John F. Kennedy Administration
This photograph of the Red Room was taken on May 8, 1962 during the John F. Kennedy administration. The Red Room is one of three state parlors on the State Floor of the Executive Mansion named after a color, with the designated red dating as far back as 1845 and the James K. Polk administration. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy redecorated the parlor in 1962, utilizing the American "Empire" furnishings in the White House Collection and a design motif inspired by American cabinetmaking of the 1820s.
