On St. Patrick’s Day, the whole world turns Irish for twenty-four hours. In the U.S., it is a day filled with parades, festivities, and a lot of greenery. Celebrations also include the presentation of a bowl of shamrocks from the Prime Minister of Ireland to the President at the White House. But how did such a unique St. Patrick’s Day tradition at the White House come about? Join us for History Happy Hour on Thursday, March 16 at 6:00 pm ET to hear Dr. Michael Kennedy, Executive Editor of Documents on Irish Foreign Policy at the Royal Irish Academy, and Michael Cronin, Academic Director of Boston College in Ireland, explore the Shamrock Ceremony and discuss St. Patrick’s Day at the White House.

History Happy Hour is a biweekly virtual program hosted by the White House Historical Association. Join us as experts weigh in on a variety of historical topics, share their insights, answer audience questions, and enjoy presidential-inspired libations.
