Red Room, Theodore Roosevelt Administration

This black and white photograph of the Red Room from the Detroit Publishing Co. was taken around 1904 during the Theodore Roosevelt administration. The Red Room is one of three state parlors on the State Floor of the Executive Mansion named after a color, with the designated red dating as far back as 1845 and the James K. Polk administration. In 1902, President Roosevelt oversaw the first major renovation of the White House under the direction of renowned architect Charles Follen McKim of the New York firm McKim, Mead and White.
